You can tell she was a retired mechanics car since the ball joints are cleaner than the windshield. Everything mechanical is new and shiny and the body looks like it hasn’t been touched beyond a quick soak with a hose in the past 38 years. There even some brushed on Tremclad to hide the blemishes.
Driving her home felt like floating on a cloud, the 425ci V8 barely whispering at 80mph and only the lightest touches of the wheel and brakes to alter its course.
Some easy sanding and a lick of paint topped with some new vinyl and it’ll be just as she was in 1978.
Most of you guys guessed correctly yesterday, it’s a 1978 Cadillac Coupe Deville d’Elegance. I’ll try to keep you updated on the progress.

Good to see I’m not the only one loving a land yacht. Mines not quite as nice as yours though.

okay, NOW I’m jealous.
This is ‘’demolition derby’’ price, but this car is waaaay too nice for that.
How many miles?

About 70,000 miles. The divers seat is a little worn, but the padding is good and they’re not too hard to recover.

What a deal! Where’d you find her?

Toronto, so that’s about 80 bucks to you Americans.

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again: thank god you didn’t buy a Lincoln. Last thing oppo needs is another goddamn late ‘70s Lincoln. Also would you like authorship to Cadillac Corner?

I don’t know what that is, and yes.

Yeah!! Welcome to the land yacht club. Old barges are great and I love the creamy yellow paint. Pictures of the interior?

Full on freedom machine you got there. I still miss my yacht.
One day I guarantee I’ll have another.

Close. 84 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. Used to belong to G Body Man actually. Got it from him back in August.

MOAR LINCOLN
(this phrase works better with Mercury)

Long ago I had a 76 Lincoln with a 460, it was definitely quicker than this one but not nearly as buttery smooth.

It’s actually serving as my daily right now since I wadded up the SHO. Have found a donor car though.

sweet. always makes it happy when a car is saved from the scrap yard

Congrats! Love to see when these less valued cars get saved. They are just as worthy of saving

I’d rather save a car from the Crusher than buy a new car any day.
It’s one of those things, if a car could talk, what stories would it tell? Was this Olds driven by a Grandmother who’s grand kids got excited when they saw it’s great brown bulk roll into view? Or was it used as a cross country traveller, eating up miles across the Trans Canada highway? How many different faces and places has that car seen?
I’d rather have a car with character and patina than a new car with stupid electric gizmos out the wazoo.
There is a sort of satisfaction knowing you’re driving a dinosaur, something that is still clinging to life even though it’s time has long since passed. I plan on helping this car cling on for as long as I can. And when I no longer can, it’ll be passed on to the next care taker.

Good man, good man.
My Montego was a Grandma car and that’s an awesome perspective you presented above.
